I was for three months in the Philippines to document the stories of two typhoons: Sendong, which hit the island of Mindanao in 2011, and the recent Yolanda, which destroyed entire coastal towns in the area of Cebu. Soon I will be releasing a 50 minute long documentary about it. Below, the picture of a seaweed plantation in the island of Bantayan.
Lipari, Salina, Stromboli, Vulcano, Panarea, Filicudi and Alicudi are the islands known as Aeolian, an archipelago full of biodiversity and interesting sites to explore. Starting from its impressive volcanoes (the name "volcano" itself comes from the island of Vulcano) all the way to important archeological remains, the Aeolian islands are one of the most special archipelagos in the world. Its two active volcanoes (Stromboli and Vulcano) have impressed travelers since thousands of years, and Stromboli is indeed one of the most active in the world, with an average of eruptions of about one every hour. Archeologically, these islands made their richness already 7000 years ago by making jewels out its abundant minerals. Invaded numberless times over the centuries, the Aeolian islands have known periods of complete isolation and harshness, followed by a renewal of reputation thanks to its wonderful climate and scenery. Nowadays, they're one of the most chic tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, a treasure for few to discover, due to the geographical position, but definitely worth a thought.
